Un-Just 'War' Against Terrorism and the Struggle to Appropriate Human Rights

DU - Ben M. Cherrington Hall - 2201 S. Gaylord St - Denver - .
Location: Cherrington Hall 301 Un-Just 'War' Against Terrorism and the Struggle to Appropriate Human Rights The liberal-left and the neo-conservative right have been battling with each other over the past thirty years to appropriate human rights on behalf of their conflicting visions of the world, diagnoses of threats to U.S. security, and prescriptions for US foreign policy. The terrorist attack of 9/11 opened a new phase in the struggle. Neo-conservatives have sought to identify the Bush Administration's various responses to 9/11 with the defense of human rights against a broad assault similar in character indeed resurgence in new clothing of fascist and Leninist projects in the 20th Century. A number of self-identified liberals, including Paul Berman and Jean Bethke Elshtain, have contributed to the neo-conservative effort. They have argued, most explicitly in Elshtain's case, that the struggle against Islamic terrorism is indeed the equivalent of a defensive war and, moreover, that it should be seen in general and in detail as a 'Just War' within the terms of the secularized version of the original Augustinian/Acquinian Just-War idea. However myopic Elshtain may be in other respects, she is certainly correct in implying that the effort to identify this Administration's foreign policies with the defense of human rights will be compromised if it were to appear that the war is unjust within the terms of the Catholic tradition. While I argue ab initio that thinking of the appropriate response to large-scale transnational terrorism (what Dick Falk calls 'Mega-terrorism') as 'war' is unwise from a human rights (and also from a national interest) perspective, I agree that Just War criteria constitute valuable moral and prudential guidelines for the US/Western response to the mega-terrorism threat. I then apply those criteria and conclude, contrary to Elshtain's claims, that taken in its entirely-including the war in Iraq and the treatment of detainees-Bush's counter-terror project fails to satisfy the applicable criteria.

Derailer Bicycle Collective - 411 Lipan St - Denver - 303-223-7174
This is one of the coolest things happening in Denver: The Build-a-Bike program is for Denver's bike-less population. This time in the shop gives priority to those who need a bicycle and want to go through the process of building one from the ground up, learning about all the working parts, internal mechanisms, and maintenance along the way. It is also an opportunity for people who want or need a different size or style of bike and need help building one up. If you are interested, come to Derailer during our hours and sign up. With the help of a volunteer you will pick out a frame that fits your body and preference, and begin making it your own. The process will take at least two three-hour Friday sessions to complete, during which most every aspect of a bike will be taken on, repaired or installed on the bike, including the drive train, wheels, steering and brakes. We will house the work-in-progress for you, but if you do not show up or call for two weeks in a row, your bike will return to the up-for-grabs pile. We are working towards providing bicycle helmets and locks for everyone who "graduates" from the Build-a-Bike Program. Make sure to sign up! Fridays 3 - 7 PM

3rd Annual Denver Zine Fest May 31st 10am-6pm First Unitarian Church 1400 Lafayette Street Denver, CO 80218 Denver Zine Fest announces 3rd Annual Gathering Iron Feather Bookstore and Denver Zine Library two of Denver's most enthusiastic supporters of underground publishing in Denver are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Denver Zine Fest, May 31st from 10 am – 6pm at First Unitarian Church in Denver. The church will be filled with self-publishers vending their zines, comix and projects. Throughout the day, volunteers will run free workshops and demonstrations offering how-to instruction on cartooning, screenprinting and of course, zine-making. The Fest is open to the public and free to attend. “Zine” (pronounced “zeen”) is an abbreviation of magazine; any self-published small press publication often a photocopied and hand-bound booklet falls under this category. The Denver Zine Fest promotes the spirit of Do-It-Yourself publishing, as well as independent thought and expression. This event also serves as a gathering for the zine community, which relies primarily on mail to communicate and distribute materials. The Denver Zine Fest aims to be a day of showcasing, selling, trading, and collaboration for zinesters, poets, comic book artists and readers alike. Last year, the Denver Zine Fest was held in March at Andenken Gallery’s former location at 21st and Market. Over 700 people attended the fest, which featured zine writers and artists from Denver and beyond. Some of this years’ vendors include local cartoonists such as Patrick Keck, Lonnie Allen and Stan Yan, Growler Distro: a local distributor of independent music and zines, John Porcellino of the fifteen year old King Cat Comix, The Project, a zine composed of writings by Denver youth, Ironfeather Journal, Mixtro Distro and and many more to be announced. Throughout the day, volunteers will lead workshops and skillshare demonstrations on topics ranging from how to conduct an interview to silk-screening to cartooning. Denver Zine Fest has also teamed up with the Underground Carrot, who will be selling an array of tasty vegetarian foods. Zine Fests have been popularized in cities like Portland, Philadelphia, and Madison, and Denver is quickly becoming a central spot on the map of the circuit that draws zinesters away from their typewriters to swap projects and strengthen the underground community that they share.
